Dr. Philipp Marquardt

Short Bio



Philipp Marquardt is Managing Director of a multi-institution adult education organization in Reutlingen, Germany. He leads the Volkshochschule Reutlingen and related educational institutions across strategy, people, program development, and long-term transformation. His work focuses on adult education, civic learning, language education, and digital and AI-supported change.

Marquardt’s professional practice is shaped by the belief that educational institutions should do more than distribute knowledge. They should strengthen competence, autonomy, and democratic participation. In Reutlingen, he is responsible for the development of a diverse public education ecosystem, including Volkshochschule, Musikschule, Abendgymnasium, Sternwarte, Reportageschule, and further specialized education units.

Before becoming Managing Director, Marquardt led the Language Department at vhsrt, where he developed large-scale language programs, hybrid and online formats, and cross-institutional cooperation models. He is the founder of Kooperation Online-Sprachkurse (KOS), a nationwide collaboration of adult education centers for online language learning. His work connects program strategy, organizational development, digital transformation, and public responsibility.

Marquardt holds a PhD from the University of Tübingen. His academic background is in German Studies, History, Comparative Literature, and Media Studies, with teaching and research experience at the University of Tübingen and Brown University. His current interests include the future of lifelong learning, AI in education, institutional resilience, and the role of public education in a changing society.
